January 23, (THEWILL) – Southampton frustrated Manchester City with a tenacious display at St Mary’s, denying them a 13th successive Premier League victory.

Aymeric Laporte cancelled out Kyle Walker-Peters’ first Premier League goal, and Southampton took points from City for the second time this season.

It was the Saints who got off to a flying start, and with only seven minutes on the clock, Walker-Peters put the hosts ahead with a well-taken goal, making his first Premier League goal a memorable one.

Southampton had the ball in the net again midway through the first half, this time when Armando Broja deftly finished past Ederson. However, the burgeoning star was slightly offside.

But City took a long time to get going and did not perform up to their normal excellent standards. It took them a while to settle into the game, but as the first half went, they began to turn the screw to create some chances.

With a curling effort into the far corner, Raheem Sterling almost equalised. Fraser Forster then denied the same player from close range, pushing the loose ball away with his foot to prevent the City star from scooping up the rebound.

Broja’s threat on the break lingered after the interval. The teenager sped through once more, but Ederson and Aymeric Laporte were able to stop him. Broja then turned the ball onto the post from close range from the resulting corner.

Just before the hour mark, both Phil Foden and Rodri came close to equalising, the former having a shot saved by Forster and the latter clipping the top of the net.

When Laporte equalised from a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick, after he snuck between defenders to meet the inch-perfect ball with his head, Southampton rued not extending their lead.

City’s confidence and urgency were boosted by the goal, with De Bruyne looping an effort just wide of the post and excellent substitute Gabriel Jesus also putting Forster to the test. A lengthy VAR review was also undertaken for a possible trip on De Bruyne, which was eventually determined to be just beyond the area. Southampton, on the other hand, fought to the bitter end to earn a well-deserved point.

Southampton returns to FA Cup action on February 5 when they host Coventry City. Manchester City will host Fulham at the Etihad Stadium on the same day in the same competition.
