Governor Nyesom Wike has flagged off a land reclamation project in the Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Under the new plan which would provide land for the Abonnema and Obonoma communities, a total of 52 hectares would be reclaimed by the administration.
Governor Wike who was in the local government area Wednesday in continuation of the flag off and commissioning of projects across the State disagreed with moves by the contractor to complete the project in 11 months.
He rather directed the contractor to accomplish the task in eight months and raised the payment made on the execution of the project from 50% to 70%.
There was however, mild drama when Governor Wike expressed surprise at the disclosure that only 42 hectares of land would be reclaimed.
Recalling that the new figure read by the SA to the Governor was not what was on the paper which formed the basis for the approval given, Wike said it would amount to fraud if the SA and the contractor handling the project did not ensure that the target of 52 hectares is achieved.
Also speaking, Senator Wagbara, a former Senate president lauded Wike for embarking on people oriented projects.
Absorbing Senator John Mbata of the allegation peddled against him by the Obasanjo administration, Wagbara revealed that Mbata had suffered innocently because of moves made to target him while he served as Senate President.
Mbata had been accused years ago of embezzling funds attached to an educational scheme after Obasanjo went after Wagbara.
The former President of the Senate was a Special Guest appealed to the Abonnema and Obonoma communities to ensure that both the rich and the poor benefit from the allocation of parcels of land in the reclaimed areas when the time comes.
